The contents of each of these folders and an overview of the course are listed in the downloadable Table of Contents of the CD-Rom. Study Units lead young students to understand the parts and functions of a variety of animals with backbones. A Windows Media Tutorial will help you use these study units effectively. Diagram Activities help students to apply their knowledge of the characteristics and parts of animals, while the Classification Lines give students experience in sorting animals according to their scientific classifications and prepare them for High School Biology. They are described in the Classification Lines section. Primary Writing Worksheets are an introduction to outlining and writing. Beginning readers can learn to observe characteristics, organize their ideas and write simple sentences describing an animal. Writing Activities for older students provide a template for writing a clear, concise, and accurate descriptive paragraph. A series of four Windows Media Tutorials on the subject is included on the disk. Templates on the CD enable teachers and/or older students to make their own study units, diagram activities and classification lines. The course includes access to the Senari Academy Vertebrate Class and the Vertebrate Jr. Class (for younger students) on Quia.com. These classes include quizzes and activities related to the topics covered in the study units, diagram activities and classification lines on the CD. The study of Microbiology is a hands-on project. Dr. Rosemary Chacko has helped us prepare the activities and tools on this disk to provide you and your students with tools that will help in this study. Beginning with the microscope, the names of the parts and their descriptions and functions are presented in both print and interactive formats. While using the printed study unit and diagram materials for the microscope, you and your students should practice with an actual microscope. The interactive formats (Windows only) of these activities have 2 variations. In the Learning Lab version, the student may use the "Show Me" button to see the answer and descriptions, while the Test version allows parents/teachers to assess students' mastery and understanding of the concepts. After the students are comfortable with the use of the microscope, other study units and diagrams are useful to help the students understand the basic organelles and structures of the plant cell, the animal cell, the euglena, paramecium, amoeba, and bacteria. These materials enable students to focus on the things they will see as they use the microscope. Printable diagrams and manipulatives make it easy to present the same basic material to students of different age and learnng levels. In the classroom, the individual units can be used to help students identify what they are looking at in the microscope. In addition, study units provide writing exercises that enable the student to describe the organisms: compare, contrast and delineate the various functional similarities and differences. Then, the student can use the manipulatives to create "games" for younger siblings or for test preparation. This encourages the "See one - Do one - Teach one" method that reinforces learning by involving students in teaching their peers. For pre-schoolers like Josh, use coding dots on the pages and the corresponding cards. Very young students can differentiate between groups of animals and learn their characteristics quickly and easily using this hands-on activity.
