In the Sounds sections, Little Bear asks the question. If the student clicks on the "Help" button, he also gives the name of each object as the word appears above it. The student is given feedback vocally and visually after he answers the question.

A short video demo of a four year-old using the Beginning Sounds section of the Phonics Class may be viewed online or saved to your hard drive. It demonstrates how the program can be used as patterned reading.

The Phonics Class and Sound Box lessons follow Montessori-style lesson plans that are designed to help young children learn and practice reading skills independently. The lesson plan included in the Sound Box Demo explains the teaching method for both products.

The Phonics Sound Box

These multi-level manipulatives are designed for instruction in phonics, spelling, and syllabication. Sets of pictures and labels can be printed and laminated for use by an individual child or small groups. Use them for teaching, individualized work, practice, and testing. Each sound has at least 4 pictures and labels.

We have used the system described in The Writing Road to Reading to indicate the pronunciation and spelling rules for the words in the lessons. The 13-minute Phonics and Spelling tutorial may be viewed online or saved to your hard drive. It is designed to help parents and teachers use this method to teach phonics. This system is also an effective tool for teaching spelling to older students.
